China Fruit Traceability: Checking Growing Areas and Packing Houses

Check fruit growing-area and packing-house evidence for China by connecting approval scope, lot identifiers, packing records and shipment documents.

China fruit traceability is strongest when a buyer can follow a carton back through packing and production records. A printed code is only the starting point. The important question is whether the code belongs to the right operation and is supported by records for the fruit actually supplied.

Identify each entity in the supply chain

Ask the seller to distinguish the trading company, grower, packing house and any processor. Record the names and addresses used in official and commercial documents. If different parties use different spellings, resolve the relationship before shipment.

For a product subject to an establishment or growing-area approval, have the importer verify the current requirement and official status. Do not assume that one approved operation can cover fruit from an unrelated source merely because the exporter has access to its number.

Check approval scope rather than appearance

A certificate or screenshot should be assessed for the commodity, establishment and validity or status it represents. An attractive document design does not make its scope broader. Ask where the record can be checked with the responsible authority.

China’s official registration provisions distinguish establishment-registration matters from separate arrangements for primary edible agricultural products. Verify the relevant commodity protocol and approval list instead of treating all codes as interchangeable.

Define the lot before asking for traceability

Agree what the supplier calls a lot. It might relate to a harvest period, production source, packing date or processing batch. The definition must be clear enough to identify which fruit and records belong together.

If several sources are combined, the traceability system should preserve that information. Mixing is not made transparent simply by adding a new label. Ask the supplier to demonstrate how it can identify the sources behind a finished packing batch.

Conduct a practical record exercise

Choose a representative carton or batch and ask the supplier to trace it through the relevant records. Look for a consistent chain between the lot mark, packing sheet, source record and dispatch information. Record how long the exercise takes and which questions remain unanswered.

A buyer does not need unrestricted access to every unrelated business record. The exercise should focus on evidence relevant to the proposed goods and agreed supplier-review scope. Request redacted or summarized records where they still establish the needed connection.

Preserve the chain through loading and receiving

Check that lot marks remain readable and that the packing list identifies the shipped batches. Loading photographs should show useful identifiers. At destination, keep batches distinguishable during inspection and storage where the operation requires it.

If a complaint occurs, identify the affected units before assuming every carton has the same problem. Good records can support a targeted review, while unclear batch identity makes both technical investigation and commercial discussion harder.

Frequently asked questions

Is a QR code sufficient proof of traceability?

No. It must lead to relevant, accurate records and correspond to the actual lot. A code linking only to a company homepage offers little shipment-level evidence.

How often should the supplier be checked?

Use a risk-based review schedule and repeat the check when the commodity, establishment, source pattern or approval status changes. Record the review date and the evidence considered so repeat orders do not rely on an unexplained old file.
