Red Dragon Fruit Bract Damage: Classify the Actual Defect

Distinguish bract appearance, skin injury and internal condition when evaluating a red dragon fruit delivery.

Red dragon fruit halves arranged on a white plate against a dark surface.

The green bracts on red dragon fruit are highly visible, so a small change can dominate a receiving conversation. Yet a bent bract, a torn skin area and an internal defect are different observations. A defect record should preserve those distinctions rather than use one broad label such as “damaged”.

Describe location and severity

Photograph the whole fruit and the affected area with a scale reference. Note whether a bract is bent, dry, broken or associated with skin damage. Record the size and position of any exposed tissue. Use the same categories throughout the sample so that separate inspectors can compare their findings.

Inspect the inside when the question requires it

Follow the agreed cut-sample plan for fruit needing internal assessment. Keep the cut result linked to its earlier external photograph. Do not assume that a cosmetic change proves internal failure, or that sound-looking flesh makes every external injury commercially acceptable. Retail presentation, handling risk and food-safety decisions should each be assessed by the responsible team.

Compare against a reference, not a memory

Approve labelled example photographs before the trial shipment. Include a clear acceptable example and a clear questioned example, with written descriptions of what differs. If an inspector finds a new defect type, record it separately instead of forcing it into an existing category. Keep the count of each category and the total inspected fruit visible.

Use the pattern to improve packing

Damage concentrated on one side of cartons may justify investigating contact points or the loading arrangement; it does not by itself prove the cause. Review packaging and handover evidence with the supplier. For HAFAMEX, send the defect map, carton references and intended retail presentation so that an appropriate packing or handling trial can be discussed.
