Ri6 Durian Flesh-to-Seed Ratio: Measure the Right Yield

Distinguish flesh-to-seed ratio from whole-fruit edible yield when evaluating a Ri6 durian sample.

A small-looking seed is attractive to many Ri6 buyers, but a photograph cannot quantify flesh recovery. Two different measures often get confused: flesh compared with seed, and edible flesh compared with the whole fruit. Define the denominator before discussing a percentage.

Choose the commercial question

If the buyer purchases whole fruit and wants usable flesh, include shell and other removed parts in the input accounting. If the question is the composition of seed-in arils, measure flesh and seeds within those arils. Name the result accurately so a high flesh-to-seed ratio is not presented as a whole-fruit yield.

Separate and weigh consistently

Identify representative fruit and record the starting mass. Under the approved preparation procedure, separate flesh and seeds using an agreed rule for material left on the seed. Weigh rejected material independently. Record each sampled fruit rather than pooling everything immediately, since pooling can hide variation that matters to the customer.

Check the arithmetic with a simple example

In a hypothetical aril sample containing 900 g of flesh and 300 g of seed, the flesh-to-seed mass ratio is 3:1. Flesh accounts for 75% of those two components combined. Neither figure says that a whole Ri6 fruit provides 75% edible flesh, because the shell was not part of that denominator. These are example numbers, not cultivar averages.

Keep the result representative

Report the sample size and range alongside any average. Avoid selecting only flat seeds or the fullest arils for the assessment. Send HAFAMEX the product form, intended yield measure and sampling procedure when discussing Ri6, so both sides use the same definition and any commitment remains tied to the actual lot.
