Vietnamese Dragon Fruit for China: Writing a Better Purchase Specification

Write a useful dragon fruit specification for China covering flesh color, size, maturity, defect tolerances, carton consistency and receiving samples.

A Vietnamese dragon fruit purchase specification for China should make the quality decision repeatable. Two buyers can look at the same carton and disagree about premium quality unless the order defines what premium means. Clear grading rules help the grower, packer and receiving team work toward the same result.

Define the commercial type and sales use

Start with flesh color, variety where relevant and intended channel. A retailer selling individual fruit may favor a different size from a processor or foodservice buyer. Do not assume that a successful sample from one channel will suit all customers.

Specify the size basis: fruit weight range, diameter if relevant or a defined carton count with net weight. Explain how borderline units are handled. Record the expected consistency within a carton as well as across the shipment.

Make maturity an acceptance attribute

Ask how the packing team selects fruit for the intended journey and sales window. Request the maturity assessment used for the commercial lot, with supporting records where available.

The UC Davis dragon fruit fact sheet identifies maturity and physical condition as important quality considerations. For procurement, the useful response is to define the customer’s eating-quality expectation and the agreed test method rather than relying only on external color.

If a soluble-solids measure is requested, define sampling, equipment and how results are reported. A measurement from one selected fruit cannot describe the entire load. Keep the sample linked to a lot and packing date so its meaning remains clear.

Distinguish cosmetic variation from serious defects

List the defects that matter commercially: splits, decay, mechanical injury, shriveling and unacceptable bract or skin condition. Decide which minor marks are tolerable for the intended grade and how the proportion will be calculated.

Use reference photographs alongside the written standard. Photographs are most helpful when they show the boundary between acceptable and unacceptable condition. A gallery containing only perfect fruit does little to guide a receiving team evaluating normal variation.

Check carton consistency and traceability

Agree net weight, pack arrangement, protective material, ventilation and lot marking. Ask whether the offer combines fruit from several packing batches and how those batches are kept identifiable.

The receiving team should be able to find the supplier’s record for a questioned carton without tracing unrelated shipments. A readable lot mark and a matching packing list are more useful than a decorative traceability label with no accessible underlying record.

Align the inspection method before arrival

Agree how many cartons are selected, which positions are sampled and how defects are classified. Record the inspection timing and who is authorized to review a disputed result. The method should be realistic for the shipment size and commercial agreement.

Review the findings after the first order. If the buyer sorts heavily because one size band is too broad, tighten that part of the specification. If acceptable fruit is rejected because the receiver uses a different visual standard, improve the reference guide before increasing quantities.

Frequently asked questions

Is a white-flesh and red-flesh mix acceptable in one order?

Only when the order explicitly permits it and the grades are clearly identified. Otherwise, specify the required type and prohibit substitution without approval.

Can product grading replace market-access checks?

No. Quality acceptance and import eligibility are separate reviews. The importer must confirm the applicable access and document requirements for the actual fruit and establishment.
